The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857.  For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.

Becoming a Member
 

As meeting and travel restrictions are gradually easing we are hopeful that the lecture series at the AC in London will recommence this Autumn. The current plan is to have the first Autumn lecture on 14 September and continue with talks on the second and fourth Tuesdays until the end of November. Exact details will be confirmed nearer the time when we have up-to-date information on pandemic restrictions. A number of speakers have already been confirmed and we look forward to hearing from them on a wide range of fascinating topics.

Tuesday 28 September 2021, Mick Conefrey. The Last Great Mountain - The First Ascent of Kangchenjunga. Mick Conefrey tells the story of the first ascent of Kangchenjunga the third highest but reputedly the hardest mountain in the world. It was an astonishing achievement for a British team led by Everest veteran Charles Evans. Drawing on interviews, diaries and unpublished accounts, Mick begins his story in 1905 with the first, disastrous attempt on the mountain by a team led by Aleister Crowley, explores the three dramatic German expeditions of the the late 1920s and brings it all to a climax 50 years later with the first ascent by Joe Brown and George Band. Copies of his new book will be available on the night.
 
Tuesday 12 October 2021. David Hamilton. TransAlp Ski: David describes this project as 'Probably the world’s best ski expedition'. This is a day-by-day account of a multi-year ski tour following the entire arc of the European Alps from Menton on the French Mediterranean coast to Vienna. The route through France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria follows the crest of Europe’s highest mountain chain, passing through regions popular in summer but deserted in winter. This was a journey of 102 stages completed over 129 days covering 2,113km with 115,058m ascent.
 
All lectures will be held at our premises of 55 Charlotte Road, Shoreditch. Non-members are welcome to attend, but are asked to make a small donation towards the costs of hosting the event.
